COLLECTIVE
An exhibition + a book + participative activities + a symposium
looking at new forms of collective housing in Europe
Having one’s own little house in one’s own little garden is still a dream for many, but today, new alternatives are
challenging such hackneyed stereotypes in the form of collective housing of top architectural quality with a city lifestyle
to boot.
Variations on such alternatives are currently being declined across Europe, with each providing their own answers to
the central themes of individual comfort, private space and urban living.
Collective housing provides a meaningful alternative to urban sprawl and an answer to the pressing demands of
sustainable development.
What factors govern where we decide to set up home, be it a flat, terrace or tower block? Is it really no more than the
dictates of our financial situation or our environmental conscience? Or will we let ourselves be convinced by the appeal
of architectural designs whispering promises of lifestyles far better adapted to our age and territory?
Can collective housing engender new ways for us to enjoy living as a community?
